Comments: This Qandhar is not to be confused with the one in Afghanistan, Shah Jahan's coins of which are very common. The place in the Deccan had an important fortress, which was conquered by the Mughal army in 1630 (AH 1040) during Shah Jahan's Deccan campaign (Wiggins ONS 76, Shailendra Bhandare ONS 162). Square-area rupees of the present type are known dated 1044, with the mint-name in the left obverse margin and engraved in a style different from the Qandhar coins from present day Afghanistan. The present coin, though without visible date, is in the same style as the other Deccani coins and is the only noted specimen of either mint with the mint-name in the bottom obverse margin.
